Iron oxides vastly increase protection alongside Zinc Oxide and Titanium dioxide into the longer wavelength visible range. Z and TD do a pretty good job alone, but protection drops off for a longer UVA wavelength which still does damage (they penetrate even deeper and cause wrinkles) Considering the longer the wavelength, the deeper the penetration so sunscreens containing iron oxides help prevent these longer waves from reaching melanocytes and causing more pigment production.
